Sentosa and Tada Plan Public Autonomous Shuttle Rides for Early 2027

Sentosa’s planned autonomous shuttle service will test whether a small, app-bookable fleet can connect busy visitor areas on a fixed schedule. Sentosa Development Corp (SDC) and ride-hailing company Tada Mobility said on Thursday, Oct 29, that public rides are planned to begin in early 2027, starting in the west of the island.

The opening phase is expected to cover Siloso, Imbiah and Beach Stations. Two shuttles supplied by China-based WeRide will carry up to eight passengers apiece and travel on predetermined routes, serving 27 pick-up and drop-off points. Planned operating hours are 1 pm to 7 pm daily, with bookings made through Tada’s app.

The WeRide shuttle has room for eight passengers, and will ply predetermined routes around Sentosa.

A defined route and operating window

The initial footprint gives the service a clear operating boundary: a limited number of vehicles, a set of stops and a six-hour daily window. That structure can make it easier to assess how the shuttles fit into trips around Sentosa, including whether the stops connect useful destinations and whether the schedule matches visitor demand. The announcement does not specify fares, journey times, booking limits or how frequently each shuttle will run.

The vehicles will use both public roads and service roads. Service roads are open to service and delivery vehicles, and SDC and Tada said using them can reduce travel times. The shuttles will have a safety operator onboard and will also be monitored remotely. Those arrangements mean the trial combines automated driving with human oversight as it runs across different types of roads.

SDC chief executive Thien Kwee Eng said guests “can simply book a ride, get picked up nearby, and travel to where they want to go”. She described the project as part of SDC’s “Smart Sentosa ambition” and its role as a “living lab” for exploring mobility options that could improve the visitor experience.

For Tada, the trial is an early step in adding autonomous vehicles to its transport offering. A company spokesperson called the public trial “our first step” and said the company wants to explore how different mobility options can be made accessible to riders. The spokesperson also said Tada’s existing ride-hailing services and drivers remain important, with autonomous vehicles intended to complement those services.

What the trial is meant to establish

The stated aims are to reduce wait times, make rides more predictable and link key locations on Sentosa. Those outcomes will depend on how well the fixed routes serve real journeys and how reliably the vehicles operate during the stated hours. A route can connect named destinations on a map yet still leave gaps for visitors whose starting points or schedules do not line up with the shuttle’s stops and timetable.

SDC and Tada said findings from the trial will inform how autonomous vehicles might operate alongside existing transport modes and how the vehicles could be incorporated into Sentosa over the longer term. That makes use patterns and operating performance central measures of the project. The announcement does not provide specific performance targets or explain how the companies will report the results.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Europe is facing “the most decisive moments... in defending the freedom and peace of (the) continent”.

The first phase is only the beginning of the proposed rollout. Later phases could extend the service to the rest of Sentosa, subject to approvals from the Land Transport Authority. The wider reach therefore remains conditional; the immediate test is whether the western routes can deliver a useful connection within the planned operating window.

Singapore’s growing test activity

Sentosa has experience with autonomous vehicle trials: it ran one with ST Engineering in 2019. Singapore’s testing of self-driving vehicles dates to 2015, and activity has expanded across several locations and operators. In Punggol, Grab and WeRide, as well as ComfortDelGro and Pony.ai, are running autonomous vehicle pilots. Alphabet’s Waymo has said it plans to begin rides in 2028.

That wider activity offers context for Sentosa’s project, but the operating conditions differ by location. Sentosa’s visitor destinations, defined route network and service roads will shape what this particular trial can show. Its initial fleet is small, and the service has not yet begun, so the announced schedule and coverage describe plans rather than demonstrated results.

The practical takeaway will emerge from how the 27 stops work for riders, how long trips take and whether the six-hour service window meets demand. Those details can help determine whether the planned expansion across Sentosa is workable and how autonomous shuttles might fit alongside the island’s existing transport options.
